What is coaching?

In a nutshell, coaching is a process of uncovering hidden beliefs, habits, and behaviours, and then 'tweaking' them to enable the client to reach their full potential in life, or in business.  These changes assist clients to get the most out of any situation: More life; more money; more balance; more focus; more drive... Just more.

Contrary to popular belief, coaching is not only for those who are clearly down and out and in the doldrums.  It's often the case that those who could use it most are those who, on the surface, seem to be doing okay, but deep down feel that they could be operating at a much higher level.

Coaching is not molly-coddling - we are not there to simply hold your hand and listen to sob-stories.  It is focused and solution-oriented, and our purpose as coaches is to draw the best out of our clients, even if that means pushing them out of their comfort zones at times...

Based in Cape Town, most of our clients are in the Western Cape.  We are, however, available to travel, and can also do coaching over the phone or via the internet.  We also pride ourselves on our discretion - you can be assured that any material covered is completely confidential, and will not extend beyond the bounds of the coaching or advisory relationship.

Our experience and qualifications

The driving force behind Good Advice is Gareth Cotten - our founder, and CEO of The Chariot Group.  His career began at the tender age of 12, when he started working for himself, selling black bags door-to-door.  At 19, after returning to university from a 9-month leave of absence to work overseas, he started his first company, Chariot Limousines, which still operates successfully today.  While involved in a number of profitable ventures over the coming years - such as a party bus business, and an interest in a nightclub, to name a few - he completed his studies, obtaining a B.Comm (Accounting) and then his Honours degree in Taxation (both through UCT).  In his free time, he has also obtained a Legal Diploma, a Certificate in Hospitality Management, and has passed the Estate Agency Board Exam to boot.

Business aside, he has a keen interest in personal development and, prior to pursuing his certication as a New Insights® life coach in 2009, he had been coaching informally for a number of years - especially other small business owners who approached him for advice.  After one particularly fruitful session, one of these business owners said: "You should do this for a living!"  The idea stuck, and as a way to test the waters, he started a Facebook group - "Finance Coach (by Gareth Cotten)" - in 2008, offering free personal finance and business tips.  Over time, the group developed a loyal international following, and continues to grow from strength to strength today.  This success was the ultimate catalyst that convinced him to open his own coaching and advisory practice... and Good Advice was born!
